I was saddened and disappointed when I read the guest opinion by Jan Eshete in the Tooele Transcript on July 6. Jan and her husband Rundassa, who is from Ethiopia, live here in Tooele County. Evidently racial slurs were painted on the fences of their businesses here and in Salt Lake. They have seen this dark side of humanity in the past. Unfortunately that does not make it easier to deal with new occurrences.
I know that these recent actions by a few do not represent the feelings of the majority of Tooele county residents. Surely we are better than this.
I thought a meaningful way of showing community support would be for Tooele county residents to donate to at least pay to cover the repairs to their property.
An account — #1085293 — has been set up in their name at Chartway Credit Union to accept donations. If more money is collected than is needed to cover the damages, the surplus will be sent to help fund a school they built and now continue to support in the countryside of Ethiopia — Hundee Ibsaa School www.pangaeafamilyfoundation.com.
You may also donate directly through the website.
