More than two months of early-morning training sessions paid off for the Tooele girls tennis team on Monday morning, as the Buffaloes rolled to a 6-0 win over Hunter in the season opener at Tooele High School.
“We have 30 girls playing and they have really improved this summer,” Tooele coach Lyle Nielson said in an email. “We are very excited about the team this year and we have some very fun girls.”
While the Buffs won all six matches against the Wolverines, those victories didn’t come easy. Madeline Sheppard needed three sets to beat Hunter’s Tessa Condie at third singles, including a tiebreak in the final set. Sheppard prevailed 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (2). Camilla Pankratz and Cately Jensen survived what Nielson called a “gut wrencher” against the Wolverines’ Michelle Panomeno and Kylee Chadwick, winning 5-7, 6-0, 6-2.
Angela Shaw beat Hunter’s Alai Finau 7-5, 6-3 at first singles.
“(Finau) served hard and had some great topspin, but (Shaw) took everything (Finau) gave her and gave it back,” Nielson said.
Hanna Sheppard beat Hunter’s Hannah Olschewski 6-0, 6-3 at second singles. Brinley Dunn and Marynn Hamilton were 6-1, 6-4 winners over Anya Johnson and Bethany Gardner at second doubles, and Brooklyn Petersen and Ashlynn High beat Hunter’s Candace Sanders and Azlynne Myler 6-2, 6-1 at third doubles.
The Buffs traveled to Nephi for a non-region match against Juab that was not complete at press time Tuesday. They will take part in the Cache Valley Tournament on Thursday, with road matches Aug. 18 against Grantsville and Aug. 19 against Delta. Tooele’s next home match is Aug. 21 against Cyprus.
