Following a comeback win in its summer season-opener against Highland High, the Tooele High Buffaloes were bested by Grantsville’s summer team last Friday.
Despite scoring the game’s first run at the top of the first — which came off a Madex Vonhatten groundball that scored Reeder Conger — the Buffaloes’ early 1-0 lead did not last long.
Grantsville responded at the bottom of the inning, posting two runs thanks to a Brett Darrow RBI that sent Krue Warren across home plate to tie the game at one. The Cowboys took the lead in the next at-bat, when Stratton Orgill grounded out to score another Grantsville runner and pull ahead 2-1.
Tooele managed to get out of the inning, but was blanked at the top of the second after a ground out and two strikeouts thrown by pitcher Brett Darrow. The Cowboys then extended their lead by a pair of runs at the bottom of the second, as a result of two Buffaloes errors to bring the score to 4-1.
The next two-and-a-half innings were scoreless, with Tooele earning three strikeouts and Grantsville registering two. During their turn at the bottom of the fifth, the Cowboys pulled away when Cooper Castagno grounded into a fielder’s choice. Tooele’s pitcher then walked two-straight batters, one of which brought the Cowboys’ lead to 6-1.
The Buffaloes did not have an answer at the top of the next inning, and following Darrow’s single to tack on another run, the game ended after the bottom of the sixth and Grantsville won 7-1.
Darrow led the Cowboys offensively, recording two RBIs on three hits. He also led the team in strikeouts with three as well and only surrendered two hits and one run.
Tooele’s Ian Butler led his team with two hits, with Vonhatten batting in the lone RBI and Conger registering the Buffaloes’ only run.
Up next for Grantsville is a road game against Stansbury May 7 at 6 p.m., followed by a June 8 home match against the Morgan High Trojans at 6 p.m.
Tooele’s next opponent was on Tuesday against Clearfield, though the game concluded after publication. The Buffaloes end the week with a road game on May 8, when they travel to face the Roy Royals.
Other baseball action: Stansbury surrenders late-game runs to drop 5-7 contest against Syracuse High
Despite holding a lead — or being tied — for five of the seven innings, the Stansbury Stallions varsity summer baseball team dropped a 5-7 contest to the Syracuse Titans on June 5. The Stallions rebounded from a top-of-the-second 1-0 deficit and scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
After a scoreless third, the Titans managed to tie the game up, but Stansbury put up a pair of runs at the bottom of the frame to regain the lead at 5-3. Syracuse clawed its way back over the last three innings, scoring one run in the sixth and pouring on three more at the top of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead.
With three outs remaining at the bottom of the seventh, the Stallions were unable to register any offense and lost 5-7. The loss brings their summer league record to 1-2, with their next game against the Roy Royals. Final results of the game were unavailable by time of publication.
