The Tooele girls broke into the win column for the first time on Thursday and nearly made it two in a row on Friday.
The Lady Buffaloes doubled up Box Elder in the third quarter outscoring the Lady Bees 14-7 to come from behind for a 44-43 victory in Brigham City.
On Friday, Orem led Tooele 35-34 in the fourth quarter with 1:18 left in the game after Taylor Thomas drained a 3-pointer from the right corner, hit a foul shot followed by a made foul shot by Baylee Hansen.
Orem came back to hit three foul shots in the final minute to go a ahead 38-34 with Thomas hitting another 3-pointer in the final second to cut the final score to 38-37 for the Lady Tigers.
Tooele’s record is now 1-8 with a home game Tuesday against Carbon and a road game at Provo on Thursday.
Box Elder opened with an 11-8 first-quarter advantage, and held on to the narrow advantage to lead 21-18 at intermission. That’s when the Lady Buffaloes surged ahead to lead 32-28 after three quarters. Box Elder outscored Tooele 15-12 in the final quarter, but the Lady Buffs held on to post a narrow victory.
Nine players scored in the victory including 10 from Thomas, 10 from Hansen, seven from Rylee Whitehouse and six from Courtney Schiwal.
Tooele had a difficult time getting on the board early in the Orem game and didn’t score until Amber Haskell entered the game and knocked down her first jump shot to cut the Lady Tigers’ lead to 4-2 with 3:23 left in the opening stanza.
Tooele tied it at 6 apiece on a jumper by Whitney Leakehe with 19 seconds left in the first quarter, but Orem countered with a basket to make it 8-6 for the Lady Tigers after one.
Tooele kept it close in the second quarter on five consecutive points by Schiwal. First, she connected on a baseline jumper, and then sank a 3-pointer from the left angle. Tooele executed a great play on an inbound pass underneath its own basket with Paris Stewart scoring to tie the game at 13-13.
The Lady Buffs trimmed an Orem lead to 16-15 with 20 seconds to go until halftime with a basket from Hansen on a fast break, but Orem’s Jazlyne Price made an old-fashioned 3-point play with 1 second to go and Orem led 19-15 at intermission.
Thomas hit one of her three 3-point shots to start the second half which kept he game tight. Later in the third, Tooele took the lead at 25-24 when Thomas scored on the break. But Orem snatched the lead back quickly on a 3-pointer by Emily Kenney.
The game was tight in the final quarter with Orem hitting enough foul shots to hang on for the victory.
Thomas led the way with 14 points followed by Hansen 7, Shiwal 5, Haskell 4, Leakehe 4, Stewart 2 and Whitehouse 1.
