Tooele swimmers sink 4A Cyprus in Magna meet

Buffs will honor seniors when they host Region 11 foe Bear River on Thursday  

Both the boys and girls Tooele swim teams defeated Cyprus Thursday afternoon in Magna.

Tooele boys came out on top 92-78, and the girls sank the Lady Pirates 114-56.

“For the first meet after a long Christmas break, there were some times that were very good and some that looked like times from earlier in the season,” said THS coach Mel Roberts. “it was a good meet to find what we need to work on for the next three weeks. We also got to look at several swimmers in different events.”

The Tooele girls won five of the eight individual events, and all three relays on their way to the win.

Individual event winners were Kelly Clonts (200 free), Brook Baker (50 free), Katelin Hardy (100 butterfly), Maddi Nichols (500 free) and Cassidy Evans (100 breaststroke).

Wylie Dalton and Andrew Merkley led the boys to the win as they finished first and second in the 50 and 100 freestyle, along with winning the 400 free relay.

Other individual event winners for the boys were Peter Imlay (200 free), Jack McEachern (500 free) and Jacob Leatham (100 breaststroke).

The 200 medley and 200 free relays were very close, but Cyprus won them both.

Tooele coaches selected Nichols as the swimmer of the meet for the girls. She finished third in the 200 IM, first in the 500 freestyle and was a member of the 400 free relay team.

McEachern was selected as the swimmer of the meet for the boys. He swam a season’s best time in the 100 fly for a second-place mark. He finished first in the 500 freestyle, and swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay team.

The coach also pointed out some top performances from some of his swimmers on Thursday.

Andrea Howsden swam 2:28.94 in the 200 free, missing out on third place by one-half of a second.

Joshua Robinson hit 2:12.96 in the 200 freestyle, which was good for third place. Hardy finished second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:40.25.

Tooele boys were strong in the 200 IM with C.J. Dingman second at 2:40.09, Forrest Nichols third at 2:20.42 and Jake Nelson fifth at 2:45.60.

The Tooele girls were strong in the 200 free relay with a first and second place. The second-place team won by .12 of a second over the Cyprus team. That team included Zoie Shellenberger, Hayley West, Howsden and Nichols.

Dingman finished third in the 100 backstroke. He clocked 1:13.93 for third in the 100 yard backstroke.

Tooele girls finished first and third in the 400 free relay event. The third-place team beat out a Cyprus team by .26 seconds. The team included Shellenberger, Jessica Miller, Knowles and Aumanae Hitesman.

Tooele hosts its last dual meet of the season on Thursday agaiinst Bear River at 3:30. Tooele will honor its 12 seniors.
