Utah Music Teacher Association Tooele Valley Chapter April Music Student of the Month: Emlyn Lovell

Emlyn Lovell, age 11, is the UMTA Tooele Valley Chapter Music Student of the Month for April. A fifth grader at Settlement Canyon Elementary, Emlyn has studied music and piano for five years and flute for one year, and is a member of the elementary band that meets at Tooele High School. Emlyn enjoys performing in recitals, especially when she participated in the Let’s Play Music program. In her third year of Let’s Play Music, she got to play a duet with her mom, Annika, and got to perform her own original composition called “The Butterfly.” She also enjoyed playing in a Tooele Valley Music Teachers Association Ensemble Recital, where she played a flute and piano duet with her sister, Alison, called “Whistle While You Work” from the Disney movie “Snow White.” Alison dressed up as Snow White and Emlyn dressed as Dopey the Dwarf.

Emlyn also enjoys composing music, and her compositions have won awards at her school’s PTA Reflections competitions for the last four years. She has performed twice in the Settlement Canyon Elementary talent shows. “I like playing the piano and flute because music makes me feel happy inside,” she said. She feels learning to play an instrument is a great way to develop a talent you can share with others. Emlyn currently studies piano with Valori Layton, and has also studied with Terreye Zaleski. She participated in Let’s Play Music classes with Annika Lovell. She also enjoys ballet dancing at Tooele Valley Academy of Dance, where she was able to perform as a toy doll in the Nutcracker. She loves hiking, camping, going to Activity Days, and doing the Junior Ranger programs at National Parks, where she has earned four badges. Emlyn is the daughter of Aaron and Annika Lovell of Tooele.
