Wendover moves to 4-0 in region with win against Telos

The Wendover Wildcats continued winning Friday, this time on the road against Telos in Orem.

Seniors James Trujillo and Hector Duran once again caught fire to lead the Wildcats past Telos 75-54 for their 10th win of the season, remaining unbeaten thus far in Region 18. Trujillo scored 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting, and Duran scored 23 points on eight-of-12 shooting, as the Wildcats opened with a 12-point lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Wendover closed the game in the fourth quarter by outscoring Telos 21-11.

Trujillo not only led the team in scoring, but he also dished out nine assists. Duran led the defensive charge with seven steals and four blocks. The Wildcats also got production from senior Jose Collazo, who scored eight points on four-of-five shooting.

Wendover plays three home games this week, which starts Tuesday night against West Ridge Academy. It then plays againt Intermountain Christian on Wednesday and Tintic on Friday.

Wendover won its first matchup against West Ridge in West Jordan on Jan. 3 87-57. The Wildcats had five players score in double figures that game, including Trujillo with 25, Dallan Murphy 15, Landyn Shepherd 15, Duran 13 and Luis Lopez 10.

This will be the Wildcats’ only matchup with Intermountain Christian this season, and Friday’s game will be their first of two games against Tintic.

The win against Telos moved Wendover to 4-0 in Region 18 on the season. The last time the Wildcats won at least four games in region play was during the 2008-2009 season when they went 4-4, finishing in second place behind first place Dugway. The last time Wendover had a winning record in the region was the year before in 2007-2008. The Wildcats went 5-3 that year, finishing again in second place behind first place Dugway.
