As Tooele increases in population, I have often wondered why they haven’t considered the use of the Elton Tunnel on Smelter Road as a means to travel from Tooele to Salt Lake. In the winter it would eliminate icy roads and fog. The commute would be cut in half.
The tunnel is already in place and probably repairs or improvements would be minimal. This would also give another way in and out of Tooele, thus decreasing the traffic on SR-36. If this is not possible, could someone explain why?
